A Hotel Within a Hotel
At Thaba, hospitality doesn’t stop with our human guests — we’re now extending it to some of nature’s smallest travellers.
Thaba Eco Hotel is buzzing with something beautifully meaningful. As part of our ongoing commitment to conservation and mindful living, our team has introduced a brand-new initiative: Solitary Bee Hotels crafted entirely from recycled and repurposed materials.
These little wooden sanctuaries, lovingly built by our grounds team, aren’t just charming additions to our
eco park — they play a vital role in protecting some of nature’s most important pollinators.
Why Solitary Bees Matter
Solitary bees may be tiny, but their contribution to the ecosystem is monumental. Unlike honeybees, they don’t live in hives or produce honey. Instead, each female builds her own nest, quietly going about her work — pollinating flowers, supporting biodiversity, and helping our natural environment thrive.
Here’s the fascinating part:
One mason bee can do the pollinating work of up to 120 honeybees.
Their efficiency is remarkable, making them some of the most effective pollinators on the planet.
A Sustainable Initiative
Our Solitary Bee Hotels are made from recycled timber, offcuts, and natural materials collected through our recycling programme.
Every piece is intentionally designed:
- Hollow stems and drilled wooden blocks for nesting
- Natural textures that mimic their preferred habitats
- Eco-friendly materials that blend seamlessly into our reserve
Placed thoughtfully around the park, these bee hotels offer solitary bees a safe space to rest, nest, and thrive — all while enhancing Thaba’s long-standing commitment to protecting our natural surroundings.
Meet the Heart Behind the Project
The craftsmanship, passion, and care from our ground team brought this initiative to life. In the photo above, you can see two of our team members proudly carrying the newly completed structures — a wonderful example of the hands-on conservation work happening daily at Thaba.
Their dedication ensures that every guest visit supports a living, breathing ecosystem filled with small wonders.
A Small Home With a Big Purpose
By creating safe nesting spaces, we’re helping boost solitary bee populations — and in turn, supporting the health of our indigenous plants, gardens, and the broader Klipriviersberg ecosystem.
It’s a simple idea with a powerful ripple effect.
At Thaba Eco Hotel, sustainability is not just something we talk about — it’s something we build, nurture, and celebrate every day.
Small steps. Big impact. A future that grows, blooms, and buzzes together.
